The Magic of Rosemary -Witchy Thing Wednesday with Autumn Willow Witch

Rosemary is a wonderful herb that is commonly used for cleansing but is very versatile and can be used as a substitute for other herbs in magic as well.

Here are some fun historical facts and folklore about this powerful herb:

-In medieval times, rosemary was believed to be protection against infection. In modern times and because of science we know that they were right!

Rosemary contains potent anti-bacterial properties. It has been used for the following purposes: a gargle for bad breath, in food to minimize spoilage and burned as incense or in lamps to purify the air, used externally to heal wounds, clear acne, dermatitis, dandruff, lice, fungal infections and as a hair rinse to promote hair growth, health and shine. Some studies show that rosemary oil prevents testosterone from attacking hair follicles, the main cause of androgenetic alopecia in men which means it could help to combat hair-loss and male pattern-baldness. It’s also known to combat indigestion and joint pain related to arthritis. (These tidbits are purely for entertainment/interest. This article is not intended to give any medical advice. Always seek advice from a medical professional.)

-In the Victorian era, the "Language of Flowers" definition for rosemary was "Remembrance" due to it's ancient association with helping to reduce memory loss.

-It is said that students in Ancient Greece wore wreaths of rosemary on theirs heads to energize their minds.

-Victorian brides sometimes wore a rosemary sprig to symbolize carrying loving memories of her old home to her new one.

- In the middle ages, poppets were stuffed with rosemary to attract a lover.

-It has also been used to repel nightmares and ensure a good night's sleep.
